How much does AI SEO cost?
Typical SEO pricing, the closest benchmark for AI SEO, runs about $500 to $5,000 a month for retainers and $500 to $5,000 for common one-off projects, per two 2024 surveys. No survey with a published method prices AI SEO on its own, and we found none in pounds. Prices vary with scope, so a quote should say what it includes.
- No survey with a published method that we found prices AI SEO as its own service, so SEO pricing is the closest benchmark.
- Google says optimising for generative AI search is still SEO, which is why the SEO benchmark applies.
- Ahrefs found that about 63% of businesses spend $500 to $5,000 a month on SEO, and SE Ranking found that 64% of agencies charge under $1,000 a month.
- Agencies charged 138% more than freelancers in the Ahrefs survey, so who you hire moves the price more than the label does.
- Google says it costs nothing to appear in its organic search results, so the price pays for the work, not for the listing.
Prices for AI SEO (search engine optimisation for AI answers) are hard to pin down, because few people sell it as a separate product. This page uses the best data that exists, says how old it is, and names who published it.
How much does AI SEO cost?
Expect roughly $500 to $5,000 a month for an SEO retainer and $500 to $5,000 for a common one-off project. Those ranges come from two 2024 surveys of SEO providers, and no survey with a published method prices AI SEO separately.
- Ahrefs, 439 SEO providers. Updated August 15, 2024. The average monthly retainer was $2,917, and agencies averaged $3,209. The most common bracket was $501 to $1,000, chosen by 20.4% of providers, and about 63% of businesses spent $500 to $5,000 a month. The most popular one-off project fee was $2,501 to $5,000 [1].
- SE Ranking and Duda, 260 agencies. Published December 2024. 64% of agencies charged under $1,000 a month and 20% charged $1,000 to $2,000. The most common project fee range was $500 to $2,000, used by 66% of agencies [2].
Both publishers sell SEO software, so they have an interest in the topic. SE Ranking says its sample may be too small for statistical significance [2]. The two surveys also sampled different groups, which is why their numbers differ.
Why is there no clear price for AI SEO?
Because the work is SEO, and Google says so. It says that from its perspective, optimising for generative AI search is optimising for the search experience, and thus still SEO [3]. That makes SEO pricing the right benchmark.
Price lists for generative engine optimisation (GEO) do exist. The ones we found show no survey method, so this page does not use them. Treat any single AI SEO price you see as an unverified quote until it shows where it came from.
If you are looking for the cost of AI automation instead, such as an AI receptionist or chatbot, that is a different topic. It is covered in AI automation cost.
What changes the price?
Who does the work and how much they have done it matter most. In the Ahrefs survey, providers with five or more years of experience charged 33% more per month, and agencies charged 138% more than freelancers. Rates also varied a lot by region [1].
The scope changes it too. A site with ten pages needs less than one with a thousand, and a monthly content plan costs more than a one-time audit.
What should a quote include?
A quote should list exactly what you get. A project fee is a one-time price for defined work, and a retainer is a monthly price for ongoing work. Ask for these in writing:
- Scope. Which pages, how many, and which buyer questions the work covers.
- Engines. Which ones are checked, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google.
- Content. How many pages or updates a month, and who writes them.
- Measurement. How visibility is checked, how often, and what is reported.
- Term. How long you are committed, and what happens when it ends.
- Out of scope. What costs extra.
If a quote cannot answer these, you cannot compare it with another one.
How much does SEO cost per month?
For a monthly retainer, the most common bracket in the Ahrefs survey was $501 to $1,000, chosen by 20.4% of providers [1]. In the SE Ranking survey, 64% of agencies charged under $1,000 a month [2]. Both are 2024 figures in US dollars, from providers who sell SEO software or services. We found no UK survey with a published method that prices SEO in pounds, so this page gives no pounds figure.
Does SEO cost money?
Appearing in Google costs nothing. Google says it "never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results, and it costs nothing to appear in our organic search results" [4]. What you pay for is the work, whether that is your own time or a provider's.
Google also says "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google" [4]. Do not buy on a promised ranking, and judge the work by what you can measure, such as the pages published and the questions you appear for.
