How do you get your business to show up on ChatGPT?
Make sure AI engines can reach your site, then give them a page that answers each question your buyers ask. Check that crawlers like OAI-SearchBot are not blocked and your pages are indexed, then answer the question first and support claims with sources. No one can guarantee a mention.
- ChatGPT search can only show a site that its crawler, OAI-SearchBot, is allowed to reach.
- Google says a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible for its AI features, and that no special schema or AI text file is needed.
- Fix access first, then give each buyer question a page that answers it in the first sentence and backs its claims with sources.
- Bing's AI Performance report shows which of your pages Microsoft Copilot cites.
- No one controls these answers, so no one can promise you a mention.
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI features each pick which sites to show for a question. You cannot buy a place in those answers. You can remove what keeps your business out of them, and this page lists those checks in the order to do them.
Why isn't my business showing up in AI answers?
Start with three checks: can the engine's crawler reach your site, is the page indexed, and does any page answer the question a buyer asks? A no on any one of them is a likely reason you are missing.
Blocked crawlers. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search. A site that blocks it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links" [1]. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in its search results [3].
Pages that are not indexed. To be eligible to be shown in Google's generative AI features, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet [2].
No page that answers the question. Bing's guidance for being cited is to strengthen depth and expertise, improve structure and clarity, support claims with evidence, and keep content fresh and accurate [4].
What do AI engines check before they name a business?
Their own documentation names access and eligibility first, then content quality. None of it is a secret setting, and none of these sources publishes a ranking formula.
- Crawler access. OAI-SearchBot serves ChatGPT search [1], and PerplexityBot serves Perplexity [3].
- Indexing and snippet eligibility. Google requires both for its AI features [2].
- Depth and expertise. Bing asks publishers to show depth and expertise on the topic [4].
- Clear structure. Bing points to headings and FAQs that make a page easy to read [4].
- Evidence and freshness. Bing asks for claims backed by evidence and content kept accurate and current [4].
Do you need schema markup or a special AI file?
No, according to Google. It says "Structured data isn't required for generative AI search, and there's no special schema.org markup you need to add," and "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search" [2].
Does blocking GPTBot hide you from ChatGPT search?
No. OpenAI treats its crawlers as separate controls. GPTBot relates to training its models, and OAI-SearchBot relates to search, so a site can allow one and disallow the other [1].
What should you fix first?
Fix access first, then indexing, then the pages themselves.
- Check robots.txt and your firewall. Make sure OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Googlebot are not blocked. Both OpenAI [1] and Perplexity [3] advise allowing their crawlers and their published IP ranges. OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to take effect.
- Confirm your key pages are indexed. Use Google Search Console for Google [2] and Bing Webmaster Tools for Bing [4].
- Write one page per buyer question. Put a one or two sentence answer under a question-shaped heading, then explain it.
- Back every claim with a source and keep it current. Name the source, date it, and fix the page when it goes stale [4].
- Watch what gets cited. Bing's report shows which pages Copilot cites, and the next section covers the rest.
How can you check whether engines name you?
Ask your buyer questions on each engine yourself, and use Bing's report for Copilot.
Write down the five questions a customer would ask before choosing a business like yours. Ask each one on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google, and ask each several times. Look for what repeats, not for one lucky answer.
Bing's AI Performance report covers Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations. It shows total citations, the pages cited, and the phrases the AI used to find your content [4].
No one controls these answers, and no one can guarantee a mention. What you control is whether your site is reachable and whether it answers the question clearly.
We asked: “How do I get my business to show up in AI search answers? I run a small business in the UK.”
C8 check, October 2026. ChatGPT (chatgpt.com, logged out, model not shown), Perplexity (Perplexity API (sonar)), Gemini (Flash-Lite). Each prompt asked 3 times on each engine, logged out, one fresh session per run.
