How long before my business shows up in AI answers?

Short answer

No one can say, and no one can guarantee it. Documented timing is a range, OpenAI's search systems adjust to access changes in about 24 hours, Google says crawling takes days to weeks, and some changes take several months. Measure how often you appear across repeated checks, not a date.

Key takeaways
  • No one can guarantee when or whether a business will appear in AI answers, and Google calls ranking guarantees a red flag.
  • OpenAI says its search systems can take about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt change.
  • Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks, and that some changes take several months to show.
  • AI answers vary from run to run, so appearing is a rate over repeated checks, not a single date.
  • Google's Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools report impressions and citations for their own AI features.

Everyone wants a date. No engine publishes one, and no one can promise one. What you can get is the timing the engines do document, plus a way to tell whether you are moving.

How long before my business shows up in AI answers?

No one can say, and no one can guarantee it. The documented timing is a range, and none of it is a promise. Google says some changes might take effect in a few hours, while others could take several months [1].

  • Access. OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust [4].
  • Indexing. Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. It also says that requesting a crawl does not guarantee inclusion in search results will happen instantly, or at all [3].
  • Being chosen. Google says some improvements can take effect in a few days, but it could take several months for its systems to confirm that a site as a whole is producing helpful, reliable, people-first content [2]. It suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether your work helped [1].

We found no engine that publishes a time to first citation. Treat any specific number of days you see quoted as a guess unless it shows its method.

How long does SEO take to work in Google?

SEO (search engine optimisation) has no single figure either. Google says some changes might take effect in a few hours, while others could take several months, and it suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether your work helped [1]. Crawling alone can take a few days to a few weeks [3].

Why is there no single date?

Because appearing is not a switch. AI answers change from one run to the next.

SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI Overview, 2,961 runs in all. They found less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI gives the same list of brands in any two responses [6]. Gumshoe.ai sells AI tracking, so both firms have an interest in the topic.

A business can appear in some answers and not others on the same day. That makes "showing up" a rate over many checks, not a date on a calendar.

Can anyone guarantee that I will appear in ChatGPT?

No. Google says "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." It tells site owners to avoid SEOs who claim to guarantee rankings, allege a special relationship with Google, or advertise a priority submit [5].

The same logic applies to AI answers. OpenAI's crawler documentation explains how sites can be surfaced in ChatGPT search, and it makes no promise of placement [4]. Any outside promise to place you in ChatGPT is a promise about something the promiser does not control.

A fair promise is about work, not outcomes. It names what will be done and by when, such as pages published by a date and checks reported each month.

What is measured instead?

Measure how often you appear, and use each engine's own report where one exists.

  • Your own checks. Ask your buyers' questions on each engine, many times, and record how often your business is named, linked, or recommended. The SparkToro researchers call visibility percentage across dozens to hundreds of prompts run multiple times a reasonable metric [6].
  • Google search. The Performance report in Search Console shows impressions, clicks, and average position for your links in ordinary results [9].
  • Google AI features. The Generative AI performance report in Search Console counts how many times links to your site were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It has no click or query data [7].
  • Bing. The AI Performance report counts citations in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI-generated summaries [8].

What should you do while you wait?

Fix what you control first, then check on a schedule.

  1. Make sure engines can reach your pages [4], and give any change a few weeks before you judge it [1].
  2. Write one page per buyer question, and answer the question in the first sentence.
  3. Run the same checks each month, and record the date, the engine, and the wording.
  4. Ask anyone selling this work what they will do, by when, and how they will report it.
